I first came to Kanazawa in 1992 to do a BA in Japanese History at Kanazawa University on a Mombusho Scholarship. Then I got an MA, and decided I might as well try for a PhD in Japanese History as well. My research has been on the urban history of Kanazawa, with a focus on the Modern period, seeing how the dichotomy between tradition and history on the one hand and the demands of modernization on the other worked to form the ideal vision of what the city should be.
